Many Mormons were escaping religious persecution. Religion played an important role in westward expansion because of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was were people felt that the United States was entitled to expand westward, they believed that it was God’s will for the U.S. to expand west.

Mormons or the latter day saints were Christians. Yes, religion was an important part to the Mormons as they believed it was god’s word to move west. This movement was based upon the Manifest destiny.

Mormons were escaping religious persecution. Yes religion played an important role in western expansion and spreading the ideals. Because people wanted to escape religious persecution, they went west to start their own towns that didn’t persecute because of religion.
